A Joint Statement by the SA Film Academy and the South African Finishing Artists and Imaging Technicians Society (SAFAITS)
It is with immense pride and a great sense of accomplishment that we officially announce the successful conclusion of Phase 1 of the SA Post Lab 2026. Unfolding simultaneously across the vibrant film hubs of Johannesburg and Cape Town, this ground-breaking initiative has been a resounding success, effectively fortifying post-production, digital imaging, and VFX excellence.
When we launched this endeavour, we promised the industry much more than a mere short course. Today, we celebrate the delivery of a rigorously conducted skills programme developed by SAFAITS in close partnership with the MICT SETA-accredited SA Film Academy and generously funded by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). The SA Post Lab has successfully established a formidable new benchmark for professional training in post-production.
Towards Setting a New Standard: Accreditation and Alignment
The SA Post Lab is on a path of building a formally recognised, quality post-production programme. Through this inaugural programme, we have ensured that our training translates into tangible, measurable success:
- Designed to, in the near future, contribute towards nationally recognised credits.
- Strategic Mapping: Carefully mapped to vital occupational pathways within the Film and Television sector.
- Positioning: To ultimately be placed within the relevant Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority framework.
This meticulous structure ensures the national portability of our trainees’ skills, rigorous quality assurance, and clear pathways into sustainable employment and further education.
The Journey: Forging Industry Leaders
Between January and March 2026, eighteen exceptional trainees embarked on an intensive, transformative journey. Specialising in highly sought-after roles, the cohort focused on two primary streams:
- Digital Imaging Technician (DIT)
- On-Set Visual Effects (VFX) Coordination
The success of Phase 1 is a testament to our multifaceted approach to learning. Our trainees were immersed in structured theoretical instruction, hands-on practical skills laboratories, and live production workflow integration. Guided and mentored by seasoned industry professionals, these eighteen individuals have honed their craft to an exemplary standard, proving that they are ready to meet the rigorous demands of modern filmmaking.
Looking Ahead: Fostering Excellence
As we conclude this spectacular first phase, we celebrate the unwavering dedication and brilliance of our inaugural cohort of trainees. We are thrilled to announce our upcoming graduation ceremonies:
- Cape Town Graduation: Tuesday, 31st March 2026 @ Atlantic Studios, Studio 3, 7 Montague Drive, Montague Gardens
- Johannesburg Graduation: Wednesday, 8th April 2026 @ 50 Boundary Rd, Linden, Randburg
A Collaborative Triumph
By significantly reducing quality control failures, elevating technical standards, formalising critically scarce digital imaging skills, and boosting employability, the SA Post Lab is actively driving long-term transformation within South Africa’s post-production ecosystem.
None of this would have been possible without the experts in the driving seats:
- Development of course material: Seton Bailey and Sondia Viljoen.
- Course Facilitators & Speakers: Hannes Benade, Sondia Viljoen, Mbulelo “Mbu” Sandlana, Tasneen Henderson, Kubeshni Pillay, Whitemore Ngwira, Paul Hanrahan, and Simon Makwela.
